About Us

Our three human family members at a beach in Aptos, CA:

Off Grid Sustainability (OGs) is a blog documenting one family's transition to living sustainably and off-the-grid.  We realize we may be using these terms a little more loosely than some hardcore followers of this path, but we're a gray area kind of family, not black and white.  We hope to purchase land in the Santa Cruz Mountains and build a completely sustainable home for ourselves in the not too distant future.

Our family consists of:
  • Mitchell a.k.a. Daddy
  • Dianne a.k.a. Mommy
  • Cairo a.k.a. the coolest kid ever
  • Our dog, Biggie BamBam Bazooka Tooth Bronco-buck Brendanawics

Mitch is an artist, visionary, and has extensive experience with building homes, organic produce, and other awesome making-things-happen self-reliant creative super powers. He was born and raised in Columbus, Ohio, and lived in Los Angeles and Atlanta for much of his adult life when he wasn't on the road.

Dianne is a far less active artist and an out of practice, classically trained musician who studied science in college. She relies on her ability to research ideas extensively in order to contribute to their shared goals. Raised as the only child of a military father and Korean mother, she traveled extensively in her youth until settling in Atlanta when her dad retired.

Their son Cairo is just growing out of toddler-hood, and is the apple of their eyes. He is a fearless, funny, sweet little guy who is obsessed with sharks and loves the beach. His parents hope he never actually meets a shark at the beach, though.

Biggie is a very large and handsome, spoiled mutt of a beast who thinks he's a tiny lap dog. Despite his issues, he is the sweetest, most non-aggressive dog ever and is great with our young son.
